I had never noticed blogs before until I was researching our move to China and discovered Jim Jaggers Blog; Viva Shanghi. The simple interesting writing style and the wonderful photos captivated me. I started looking around and found blogs everywhere. On a Bloggers site there was a button that said “click here for your free blog” and the rest is history.
I have found so many like minded people from all around the world. I have also found that is very cathartic and fun to record our family’s life. This will be a wonderful journal of our move to China (when it finally happens).
As I realize that many people might and probably will read this, I keep some things private. Our religion, my battle with PPD, work history, political beliefs etc are private, not for public consumption. I like to keep my stories light, refreshing and friendly; I save the juicy stuff, real emotions for my closest friends. I wish I could open up more, but I just can’t, so I have great admiration for people that do.
If I find a blog that showcases things that don’t match my beliefs, I leave and don’t come back. Unfortunately not everyone is the same. There has been an instance lately where a blog I read regularly was ridiculed by a militant feminist blog with a huge readership. The owner of this blog, a lovely, pregnant stay at home mum has been hurt by the comments and ridicule. Do people think that because they are on a computer it doesn’t matter if you are rude or hurtful? I live by the old rule, IF YOU CAN’T SAY SOMETHING NICE, SAY NOTHING.
I have been thinking about this a lot lately, and feel that the WWW is a wonderful thing, but it should be taken with a grain of salt. I will be moving the computer out of the office and into the living room as the girls are starting to use the internet for school and I will want to see everything that they do. I will also be activating Nanny Net.
Life hasn’t changed since school; it only takes a few to ruin it for many.
I am soo sorry that happened. I think I am still nieve in all this. I try to "hide" things like family faces, where I live, etc.. but that does not keep you from being attacked. I really don't know what I would do, and it blows me away that a group would attack your "friend" in such a manner.
ReplyDeleteWe too have the computer out in the living room. And we have a safe net on the computer also. I believe it is important to be around kids while they are on the internet, so many parents place computers in the childrens room. And then are surprised when they find "questionable" material on their kids computer.
You are a smart wise Mother.
Blessings,
Oh, I wish I hadn't seen that. Some people are filled with such hate ... it's very sad.
ReplyDeleteWhat's sadder yet is when the people who are doing "good" are driven away by those nasties. The thing is - they're everyhwhere. It's really how we RESPOND to it. I just wish the nasties didn't have such a huge following. I think it's a "shock & awe" type of thing. Must be ...
Jenny, thanks for your kind, sweet comments. I will most definitely be back and blogging soon. I just needed some time to sort things out and reflect on things. Next time, I'll be more prepared to handle such things. And who knows? Maybe God will using this whole situation for bigger and better things. =)
